Former world champion TJ Doheny faces Michael Conlan in an all-Irish matchup.
34 year old Doheny comes into this after a one and a half year lay off, after losing to Ionut Baluta by unanimous decision. Conlan has been active, but so far his pro career hasn’t lived up to the hype of his amateur career, however he’s still undefeated and has won every fight fairly comfortably.
Doheny is quite a classy fighter, in which he throws calculated single shots but is rather flat footed. Conlan is the more athletic fighter and throws excellent body shot, although he can get carried away and throw below the belt often.
He will be the much fresher fighter, being 5 years younger and so far hasn’t taken much punishment in his career, unlike Doheny.
In Conlans last fight he outpointed Baluta, who is the same fighter Doheny most recently fought and lost to.
In Doheny’s two losses he was outworked and I think this will be exactly what happens against Conlan.
Doheny has toughed it out against world class opposition before so I don’t think Conlan will have the power to stop him.
Both fighters have fought 12 round fights before.
My only concern with this pick is how hard Conlan found it to make weight. He had to strip naked in order to make the limit, however I’m still confident as Conlan looked comfortable.
Michael Conlan fights are notoriously dull and I expect this to be much the same. It’ll probably be messy in places with a few low blows here and there but I don’t see either guy having the power to stop the other and Conlan to go on to outwork Doheny and win by decision.
