Bradley Rea is the much better fighter here. The records suggest it’s an even contest, however Rea is better in every department and has faced much better competition in the past. The only time McCarthy has fought a reasonable opponent was against Chris Blaney where he was lucky to even get a draw. Rea has recently signed with BOXXER and they’ll want to keep up his momentum now after he just beat Jez Smith in an excellent fight. This fight for Rea is an easier task in my opinion and one he’ll win in style. McCarthy’s defence is very sloppy and he also looks quite novicey when throwing punches. The Irishman also feints a bit too much and since he’s stepping up his competition big time in this fight, I think that’ll be one of his biggest downfalls as it leaves him open for punches. Although Rea only has 4 kos in his 11 wins I do believe he has good punching power as seen in the Smith fight, where he had his man down in the first round and hanging on for dear life in the final round. I also think you’ll see pretty early on that McCarthy has very little power and a lot of it is down to his punching technique, so Rea will likely notice that and be more aggressive in the early stages. My last point is although it will be a majority Amir Khan backed crowd, they’ll be a lot of support for Rea as he’s local to Manchester, so I suspect that’ll push him on to go for the ko.
There’s levels to this game and I believe Rea is going to teach McCarthy just that tonight with a stoppage victory in Manchester.
