4th ranked Benevento play at home vs last placed Pordenone in Italy’s second division. These odds are too good to not take them.
Some background info: last year Benevento was relegated from Serie A down to 2nd division Serie B. After 38 games they missed the cut by barely 4 points. Since their descent the team has remained virtually intact, which is rare. Usually everyone bails. Their star forwards and goalscorers Lapadula and Insigne have remained on the squad and are in good form. Lapadula is current #3 in leading goalscorer in the league.
In Serie B soccer, the top 2 spots get promoted to Serie A to play with the big boys and the next two spots (3rd and 4th) go to a playoff round for an additional spot in Serie A. Currently Benevento are in the 4th spot and want to get back up to Serie A in a bad way. (This is where the real money is, TV, sponsors, etc…)
Meanwhile at the bottom of the table, Pordenone sit in the last spot with little prospects of getting out of it. Their future has division 3 written all over it. Not a pretty picture. So can Pordenone put up a fight or beat Benevento at home? Not likely, but anything is remotely possible.
Benevento has a healthy squad at the moment and have played against some of the harder opponents with mixed results. However, their upcoming schedule provides an excellent opportunity to secure a spot in contention for promotion. Their first step towards that goal was a 3-2 victory last Tuesday against Vicenza and now they play at home in what should be their easiest matchup in the near future.
