Ilunga Junior Makabu (28-2) will once again look to defend his WBC cruiserweight world title having successfully done so in his last fight against Olanrewaju Durodola. That KO success took his career record to 28 wins and just two losses with 25 of those coming by means of stoppage and his power is likely to cause opponent Thabiso Mchunu plenty of problems here.
Thabiso Mchunu (23-5) has managed to win his last four fights but has not been that convincing along the way and will need to produce a career-best performance to claim the belt in this contest. Having won the WBC cruiserweight silver title, this is the logical next step for Mchunu but he will need to outmanoeuvre Makabu rather than overpower him.
This looks like a brilliant world title fight between Ilunga Makabu and Thabiso Mchunu with both men looking capable of claiming the title. It is Makabu’s to lose having won the vacant WBC belt back in 2020 before defending it in the same year and he will hope his prolonged absence from the ring does not affect him here. This is a fight where styles will be important with Makabu being the more powerful of the two while Mchunu has the skills to come out on top on the scorecards. There is little to separate the two men but Makubu’s superior punching power is favoured to prevail in this one.
