Here we have Mannarino playing in France on a fast surface which suits his playstyle after a really solid campaign at the Australian Open where he managed to beat quality players such as Duckworth, Hurkacz and Karatsev not to mention that amazing tiebreak against Nadal.The veteran could not have started 2022 in a better way and making a good performance in Montpellier should be his priority. I'm sure the French supporters are going to help him on that!
This guy is not your typical powerful tennis player but one of the most technical talented ones and the precision he has on each shot is honestly mind blowing to watch. In general this player has a really nice backhand, a good forehand and he is comfortable at the net which really helps in Indoor.
His opponent Davidovich Fokina is a young and good baseline player who exceeds in long rallies due to his powerful backhand which generates speed without much effort. What mostly lacks on his game is the service, his tactical approach and his regularity. Most of the time we can see Fokina playing really well and on the next match he loses against himself by making a ton of unforced errors and being way too predictable. His weak mentality is possibly the main reason that we don't see him succeeding more often. He only played 3 matches in 2022 losing in Sydney on the 1st round and on the Australian Open on the 2nd one. I hope he can get better in the future but when I look into young talent he's not one of the dudes that comes to my mind.
Here in Montpellier I think Mannarino can easily beat Fokina specially with the public against the most emotional player.
