Athletic Bilbao’s defense has hit a rough patch lately, with only 1 clean sheet in their last 5, but it’s somewhat understandable. Three of those five were against a top 6 offense. Playing against Getafe should be a welcome relief, as they’re a bottom 5 offense. The only thing keeping them from being bottom dwellers is a spark in the first 6 weeks of 2022. Getafe has since cooled down and were shutout in their last 2 matches against Espanyol and Valencia, two teams with poor defenses.
Even with Bilbao’s recent poor defensive form, they still have La Liga’s 4th best defense, allowing under a goal/game, and has 10 clean sheets, T-6th most. A lot of it can be attributed to the defense not allowing quality shots, as evidenced by 3rd lowest SoT conversion against. And even if a shot is allowed, Bilbao’s GK Unaí Simon has La Liga’s 6th highest save%. What’s more is that Bilbao doesn’t make too many mistakes defensively, as they’ve only given up 3 PKs, T-4th fewest.
Bilbao’s defensive strength is perfect against Getafe, who struggles to get shots off. They’re averaging just over 3 SoT/game, 4th worst, and converting at 27%, 6th worst. Remember this includes a strong start to 2022, so their “true” numbers might be even worse. Plus, Getafe shoots from 20 yards from goal on average, the highest number in the league.
Injury-wise, Bilbao will be missing their starting CB Iñigo Martínez. That will hurt Bilbao somewhat, but Dani Vivian and Yeray Alvarez have looked okay given their recent opposition. Against Getafe, they should be more than adequate. DM Dani Garcia is also doubtful, but I’d argue that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as he hasn’t looked great in his recent couple of games.
