It's the first day of the US Open Round 1. Putintseva comes into this tournament reaching the quarter-finals in San Jose (winning Vekic and Tomljanovic before losing to Mertens) but crashed out early in Montreal and Cincinnati (to Kudermetova and Pliskova respectively). Earlier in July, she won her second career title by winning the Budapest final. Clay is her best surface but she is also not bad on hard courts.

World No. 70 Kanepi has upset some top opponents throughout her career but at 36 years old, she is not the force she once was and with age, she has lost some of her step. In Chicago, she beat Kalinina in the first round before losing to Kostyuk in the second round. Outside of an excellent run to the final in the Gippsland Trophy and an ITF title this year, her form has not been good and she has not impressed. With that said, I believe Putintseva can win over the veteran. Of course, anything can happen in tennis.
