This pick hurts me because these are my 2 most favorite players to watch. Contrasting styles at play here, Berrettini is a big time server while Alcaraz thrives at outlasting his opponents during rallies. Relying on his speed and stamina worked great for Alcaraz against an aging Murray last match, but I don’t think it will have the same effect against Berrettini who is just 25 and entering his prime.

Surface also plays into my decision making here. Hard courts always favor the player’s with big serves, and Berrettini has one of the best in the game right now. Even with Alcaraz’ elite return ability, I still see Matteo blasting several Aces past him. As mentioned before I love Alcaraz, but his service game is really holding him back and it’s going to show today. If he can figure out his serve he jumps from a top 50 player to top 15 easily IMO. As of right now though I just don’t think he’ll be able to knock off Berrettini with such a shaky serve. Even if he breaks Matteo (which is hard to do) he can’t be trusted to solidify the break. Eventually I think it’ll wear on him when Matteo wins his service games quickly and every one of Alcaraz’ is a battle to hold serve.
