I'm riding another player in top form, this time as a slight underdog. Isner, ranked #26, is coming off a 3-set win on Tuesday against a strong opponent (#31 Cameron Norrie). Watching this match, Isner looked so dominant with his serve en route to 26 aces and now over 13,000 in his career. He's comfortable on American hardcourts with almost all of his best results on tour coming in the states.
His last couple tournaments in this current North American hardcourt swing:
4 wins, all vs. strong opponents including an upset over Rublev, before a semifinal loss to Medvedev
Won in Atlanta with a so-so field, best wins over Taylor Fritz and Brandon Nakashima.
Sinner meanwhile is ranked higher at #15 but recently inconsistent. He recently also won a hardcourt title in Washington; however his path was less impressive with the highest ranked opponent being #45 Sebastian Korda and other decent wins over Mackenzie McDonald and an in-form Jenson Brooksby. Compare that to Isner's 4 wins in Toronto where his opponent ranks were all between #7 and #34.
Sinner's other recent results are 1st-round exits in Toronto and Atlanta. He avoided that fate in Cincinnati with a straightforward win on Monday vs. #48 Federico Delbonis, a clay court specialist. Again, less impressive than on paper.
Isner is one of the best servers to ever play. I see him as the favorite here, and I'm getting plus money.
