Samsonova is a young up-and-coming player, and she's been one to tail all summer and now is knocking on the door of a top 50 ranking.
She's got a title on grass in Berlin as a qualifier with 5 top 50 wins, including 2 top 15 wins over Bencic and Azarenka.
Other top wins include vs. Rybakina at Montreal recently, vs. Badosa at the Aussie, or vs. Pegula at Wimbledon (where she made the Round of 16).
She's young and improving and good results have followed her all year. On the flipside, Mattek-Sands is a 36-year-old who basically only plays doubles these days. Her singles ranking has been 300+ since 2018, and she has played less that 15 singles matches every year in that span. So far in 2021, she's played 9 singles matches and none since April.
Mattek-Sands is still a fine doubles player (top 20 in the world) but she is no longer a threat in singles play. So I'm predicting a smooth win for Samsonova.
